Golf Digest's top-five best-kept secret — Pete & P.B. Dye, 1989.

18 Holes
72 Par
7,048 Yards Championship tees
150 Slope Rating 75.3

Moving 1.3 million cubic yards of earth during construction, the Dyes carved dramatic elevation changes into a relatively flat coastal landscape — a feat that gives Prestwick its most distinguishing quality: a sense of terrain that most Grand Strand courses simply cannot offer. Six sets of tees make the design accessible to a wide range of players, while the forest corridors create a sense of privacy and focus that more visible courses lack.

Named South Carolina Golf Course of the Year by the SCGCOA in 2025 and a regular Golfweek Best Courses You Can Play selection in the Carolinas, Prestwick is the kind of course that regulars quietly hope stays undiscovered. It won't stay a secret much longer.

Caddie's Notes

4 things worth knowing before your round — from tee selection to where to eat when you're done.

01
Course Character & Design
Pete and P.B. Dye moved 1.3 million cubic yards of earth to carve this links-inspired layout out of dense Carolina pine forest, an unlikely combination that works beautifully. Scottish berms, pot bunkers, and railroad tie bulkheads give Prestwick a visual personality unlike anything else on the Grand Strand. It operated as semi-private for nearly 20 years before opening fully to the public in January 2016, and it remains one of the area's best-kept secrets.
02
Signature Holes
The Dyes' fingerprints are everywhere, but the pot bunkers guarding approach zones are the holes' defining feature, shallow, steep-faced, and positioned to punish anything but a committed shot. The tight pine corridors on the interior holes demand accuracy off the tee, while the links-style berms on open holes redirect even slightly wayward shots into trouble.
03
Course Conditions
Bermuda greens run true and are well-maintained for a fully public course at this price point. The pine forest provides natural shade that helps turf quality through summer heat, and the course has a reputation for holding its condition longer into the season than more exposed layouts nearby.
04
Before You Play
Golf Digest has ranked Prestwick a Top 5 Best-Kept Secret in America, and the course was named South Carolina Golf Course of the Year in 2025, recognition that reflects how far it has come since going fully public in 2016. The pot bunkers are unforgiving, so take your medicine rather than trying hero recovery shots. Ocean Lakes Family Campground guests receive 40–60% seasonal discounts, making this one of the area's best-value rounds for that crowd. Course record is 61, set by PGA Tour player Tom Gillis.
