Tom Doak's authentic links tribute — St Andrews on the Grand Strand.

A canal snakes through the property and comes into play on multiple holes, providing the only water feature on a course otherwise defined entirely by wind, grass, and the contour of the land. Unlike any other course at Legends or on the Grand Strand, Heathland plays differently on every visit depending on wind direction and speed — a feature Doak understood and embraced from the start.
Golfweek continues to rank Heathland among the Best Public Courses in South Carolina, and the included breakfast and lunch extend the experience well beyond the 18 holes. For golfers who have dreamed of a links trip abroad, Heathland offers something genuinely rare: the closest approximation they may find without crossing the Atlantic.

4 things worth knowing before your round — from tee selection to where to eat when you're done.
01
Course Character & Design
Tom Doak's Heathland is a rare thing in Myrtle Beach: a genuine links-inspired design that earns the comparison. Very few trees, wide fairways, and unobstructed breezes create a visually expansive, open feel modeled directly on British Isles courses including St. Andrews, it's the most different-feeling course on the Grand Strand. Golf Magazine recognized it as a Top 10 New Resort Course in the World when it opened in 1990.
02
Signature Holes
The large, undulating greens with steep slopes and deep greenside bunkers are Heathland's primary defense, the wind-exposed layout means approach shots require constant recalibration based on conditions, much like playing in Scotland. A stream meanders through the back nine, and the par-71 routing (with only one par-5 on the back nine) keeps the closing stretch honest.
03
Course Conditions
Heathland's recent greens renovation has refreshed the putting surfaces that are the course's most demanding feature. The open, tree-free design means the course dries out quickly after rain, and the firm, fast links-style conditions it plays in dry weather are a genuine departure from the typical Myrtle Beach resort setup.
04
Before You Play
Heathland is the best starting point for groups of mixed ability visiting Legends, it's the least penal of the three courses and the most fun in a casual round, while still rewarding skilled shot-making. Don't be fooled by the open fairways: the wind and the greens are where scores are made or broken. Check the forecast, because Heathland plays very differently in calm versus breezy conditions.
