The Dunes has hosted the 1962 U.S. Women's Open, multiple Senior Tour Championships, and the inaugural 2024 PGA Tour Myrtle Beach Classic — a resume that reflects not just the course's caliber but its enduring place in the game's story. Seventy-one bunkers, runway-wide tee boxes, and elevated green complexes demand both power and precision from the first tee to the last.
Front and back nines offer two distinct personalities: the front winds through dense, tree-lined parkland, while the back opens into more dramatic, water-influenced terrain along Lake Singleton. For golfers who want to play where the history of Grand Strand golf was written, there is only one place to start.

4 things worth knowing before your round — from tee selection to where to eat when you're done.
01
Course Character & Design
Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed Dunes Golf and Beach Club in 1949, making it one of the oldest and most historically significant layouts on the Grand Strand. Rees Jones' renovations in 2003 and 2013 modernized the course while preserving its classic Trent Jones bones, large, well-bunkered greens, strategic use of water, and a routing that makes full use of the parkland terrain of the Grand Strand's interior.
02
Signature Holes
The par-5 18th, nicknamed 'Waterloo,' is one of the most famous holes in South Carolina, a 590-yard dogleg around Lake Singleton that has been testing golfers for over 75 years and remains a genuine strategic challenge at any handicap. The 'Alligator Alley' stretch on holes 11–13 is the course's other defining sequence, where water and wildlife frame a demanding mid-round run.
03
Course Conditions
Ultradwarf Champion Bermuda greens are maintained to the high standard expected of a private-adjacent facility that has hosted major amateur events and regional championships. The 2013 renovation refreshed bunkers and greens complexes throughout, and Dunes has a well-earned reputation for holding its conditions through the busy spring and fall seasons.
04
Before You Play
Dunes is a semi-private club, so public tee times are limited and book out quickly in spring and fall: plan well ahead, especially for morning slots. The 2013 Rees Jones renovation added 250 yards and converted the greens to Ultradwarf Champion Bermuda, and the course co-hosted the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship, which gives a sense of the standard it's maintained at. The Junior Gator Golf Academy is on-site for instruction. Trent Jones' original routing has real teeth at 7,450 yards: the runway-length tee boxes and deep bunkers on 16 of 18 greens reward precision off the tee far more than power. Alligator sightings on the back nine are common enough that the warning signs are not decorative.
