At 7,031 yards with a slope of 148, Pawleys Plantation plays to its Nicklaus pedigree: big, demanding, and strategically layered. A double green shared between two holes adds a classic touch that rewards players who study the course rather than simply react to it. Golf Digest has awarded the course 4 stars, and it was featured on Golf Channel's Big Break Myrtle Beach.
Zagat included Pawleys Plantation among America's Top Courses, and its combination of colonial plantation atmosphere, championship design, and marsh-edge drama makes it one of the most complete golf experiences on the Hammock Coast. Golfers who come expecting a typical resort course leave having played something considerably more serious.

4 things worth knowing before your round — from tee selection to where to eat when you're done.
01
Course Character & Design
Jack Nicklaus shaped this Signature design around a 200-year-old moss-draped oak property in Pawleys Island, creating two very different nines: a front nine through maritime forest with tree-lined fairways and lakes, and a back nine that directly encounters six holes on the tidal marsh. The back nine's marsh sequence is widely considered the most memorable stretch of holes on the South Strand.
02
Signature Holes
The par-3 13th is one of the most unusual holes in the state, a marsh-bulkhead island hole with the smallest green on the course, perched atop a ridge above the tidal water. Holes 13 and 16 share a 12,800-square-foot double green, a nod to the Old Course at St. Andrews. The par-3 17th plays 130 to 210 yards depending on tee placement, making it a dramatically different hole from the same markers.
03
Course Conditions
TifEagle Bermuda greens are well-maintained and among the better-conditioned surfaces in the Pawleys Island area. The marsh-facing holes on the back nine are exposed to salt air and tidal wind, which keeps turf management more demanding than inland courses, but Pawleys Plantation's conditioning record is strong as a Founders Group International property.
04
Before You Play
The Phil Ritson-Mel Sole Golf School is on-site, so if you're looking to combine a lesson with a round, this is the place on the South Strand to do it. A complimentary yardage book is provided: use it, because the marsh holes require precise distance management. On-site villas (1-4 bedroom with golf course views) are available for a stay-and-play experience, and the Palmetto Pub is a solid 19th-hole option after your round. Hootie and the Blowfish filmed a commercial here, which tells you something about the course's local standing.
