Amy Alcott's palm-lined redesign with five par-5s in play

Amy Alcott's consulting influence on the South Course is most visible in the way the four lakes interact with the five par-5s — there's a sustained risk-reward conversation throughout the round that makes the back nine particularly compelling once you understand which par-5s are genuinely reachable and which ones are setting traps for the aggressive player. The 850-plus palms lining the fairways — 500 of them native Washingtonia filifera — create a compressed, gallery-lined feel that's more immersive than the open sightlines at most valley courses. No driving range on the property means arriving loose or warming up at the North Course facility before playing. The Agua Caliente tribal land setting, shared with the North Course, gives both courses an authenticity of place that resort-built layouts simply don't have.

Caddie's Notes

4 things worth knowing before your round — from tee selection to where to eat when you're done.

01
Course Character & Design
Casey O'Callaghan's 2004 redesign, with LPGA Hall of Famer Amy Alcott consulting, turned the South Course into a sustained strategic conversation built around five par-5s and four lakes. The risk-reward decisions on the par-5s are the defining feature — Alcott's influence shows in approaches that reward players who can shape shots to specific pin positions rather than just reaching greens in regulation. The 850-plus palms, including 500 native Washingtonia filifera, create a botanical density that gives the course its visual identity.
02
Signature Holes
The five par-5s are the strategic spine of the round — each presents a different go/layup decision influenced by water position, and the cumulative effect is a scorecard that hinges on how well you managed those five holes. The four lakes come into play on six holes total, creating water pressure that builds through the round rather than appearing all at once. The San Jacinto Mountains directly behind the back nine provide the dramatic backdrop.
03
Course Conditions
Bermuda greens and fairways are maintained to the same municipal standard as the North Course. The denser palm canopy on the South creates more variable light and shadow conditions than the North, which can affect green reading. The four lakes are well integrated into the drainage, so the course handles the rare desert rain better than some of the flatter valley layouts.
04
Before You Play
Note that the South Course does not have its own driving range — warm up on the North Course range or arrive with your game ready. Walking is allowed and practical. Olla Grille is shared with the North Course. At $65–$160, the South offers a more modern, strategic round compared to the North's historical character — the two complement each other well as a pair.
