Faldo's Melbourne sand-belt translation in Palm Desert

18 Holes
71 Par
6,953 Yards Black tees
136 Slope Rating 73.9

Faldo's design brief was a genuine attempt to transplant Melbourne's sand-belt character into the Coachella Valley, and the result is a course that plays differently from anything else in Palm Desert. The tall native tawny grasses bordering fairways aren't just decorative — they create a penalty rough that approaches the severity of links fescue, and the 10 doglegs mean tee-shot shape selection is a constant requirement rather than an occasional one. The par-71 at 7,006 yards plays longer than its numbers suggest because the design consistently places hazards at the landing zones that matter. Golf Advisor's Top 25 for Layout recognition and a #22 ranking in 2024 reflects a course that has earned its reputation with golfers who look beyond the well-known names on the Coachella Valley card. As a Marriott property, Bonvoy points are earnable — worth checking alongside standard rates.

Caddie's Notes

4 things worth knowing before your round — from tee selection to where to eat when you're done.

01
Course Character & Design
Nick Faldo's design brief was to transplant Melbourne's sand-belt character into the Coachella Valley, using Kingston Heath and Royal Melbourne as reference points. Working with Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, Faldo created a par-71 layout defined by bold bunkering, tall native tawny grasses, and 10 dogleg holes that demand thoughtful tee-shot placement. The result plays differently from anything else in Palm Desert — the Australian-inspired bunkering style and the premium on approach-shot angles give the course a strategic identity that stands apart from the water-heavy Robinson and Palmer designs nearby.
02
Signature Holes
The 10 doglegs are the structural feature — each presents a different risk-reward calculation off the tee that compounds through the round. The water-framed closing stretch is the course's most dramatic passage, where the strategic demands intensify and the consequences for poor positioning escalate. The tall native grasses framing the fairways are not decorative — they create a genuine penalty for offline tee shots.
03
Course Conditions
Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda greens are maintained to a resort standard consistent with the Marriott Golf operation and Bonvoy points program. The Golfzon Leadbetter Academy on-site provides one of the more credentialed instruction options in the valley. The sand-belt bunkering style means the bunkers play firmer and faster than the softer sand most desert golfers are accustomed to.
04
Before You Play
Walking is allowed and the course is reasonably walkable. Full grass range and short game area on-site, plus the Leadbetter Academy for instruction. Marriott's Shadow Ridge Resort is the stay-and-play base, and Bonvoy members can earn points on golf. The Shadow Ridge Clubhouse Restaurant handles post-round dining. Green fees of $59–$219 represent strong value for a Faldo design with Marriott-tier conditioning.
