City-owned desert design with 100 bunkers and new Mini Verde greens

Desert Willow Firecliff represents the better case for city-owned golf — a course that competes with private resort layouts on design quality while remaining publicly accessible at reasonable rates. The Hurdzan-Fry-Cook team built their environmental sensitivity into the design's DNA, preserving native plant communities and using natural desert waste as a visual and strategic element rather than a maintenance shortcut. With 100-plus bunkers distributed throughout the layout, precise shot placement off the tee is more valuable than extra distance — a design philosophy that tends to produce better and more interesting golf. The 2024 Mini Verde Bermuda green renovation updated the course's most critical surfaces to a specification that plays firm and fast, closer in feel to premium resort conditions. The Palm Desert Golf Academy operates on-site, making this a natural choice for golfers who want instruction alongside their round.

Caddie's Notes

4 things worth knowing before your round — from tee selection to where to eat when you're done.

01
Course Character & Design
Hurdzan, Fry, and Cook built Firecliff as Palm Desert's public flagship — a city-owned course that competes with private resort layouts on design quality while remaining accessible. The 100-plus bunkers and sweeping desert waste areas reward shot-making over raw distance, and the environmentally sensitive native-plant design creates a course that feels integrated into the desert landscape rather than imposed on it. Mini Verde Bermuda greens were refreshed in 2024, and the Palm Desert Golf Academy operates on-site.
02
Signature Holes
The bunker count is the headline number, but the waste areas are what define the strategy — they frame fairways in a way that demands a specific line off the tee rather than just 'hit it long and find it.' The desert wash crossings create natural risk-reward moments that feel earned rather than manufactured. At 7,056 yards from the tips with a 147 slope, this is a course that will find weaknesses in every part of your game.
03
Course Conditions
Mini Verde Bermuda greens are among the best putting surfaces in the Palm Desert public course cluster — the 2024 refresh brought them back to top form. The native-plant design means the rough transitions quickly from maintained turf to desert scrub, so offline shots carry real consequences. Winter overseed keeps fairways green and receptive November through March.
04
Before You Play
Walking is allowed — one of the few desert courses where it's a viable option, though the distances between some greens and tees make a cart the practical choice in warmer months. The full grass range and short game area are included, and the Palm Desert Golf Academy is on-site if you want a tune-up. The Terrace restaurant serves the post-round meal for both Firecliff and Mountain View. Pair this with Mountain View for a full day — Firecliff for the challenge, Mountain View for the scenery.

FAQ

Common Questions

Firecliff is the more challenging of the two — 100-plus bunkers, more aggressive waste area framing, and the 2024 Mini Verde Bermuda greens playing firm and fast. Mountain View has 98 bunkers and seven water features but on a more accommodating canvas. First-time visitors to Desert Willow should start with Mountain View.
Yes — walking is allowed, though a cart is recommended given the desert heat and course distances. GPS carts are provided.
Yes — both Desert Willow courses overseed with ryegrass November through March. The 2024 Mini Verde greens on Firecliff play well year-round; expect variable fairway conditions during transition periods in October/November and March/April.
