The most playable Dye — links character, 2024 restoration
Pete Dye arrived in the desert in 1981 and spent the next five years building three courses at what would become PGA West. The Dunes was first, and it reflects an architect still discovering what the desert could do for him — the railroad-tie bulkheads, the small lake hazards, the placement-over-power philosophy all appeared here before Dye pushed them to their extremes on the Mountain and Stadium courses. That relative restraint makes the Dunes the natural entry point into PGA West's Dye trilogy. Tim Liddy's 2024 restoration was a deliberate return to original specifications — original green contours, rebuilt bunker complexes, and a playing character that Liddy (who worked closely with Dye) understood from first principles. The 1998 PGA Tour Q-School hosted here confirms the course's competitive credentials. It shares the Pete Dye Clubhouse and Pete's Grill with the Mountain Course.
